FAQs

We get a lot of calls and emails from customers needing the same information so we wanted to share with you the answers to the most frequently asked questions:

How do I know what strength of solution to mix? The mixing kit makes any solution from 5% to fully saturated (SSKI) so the choice is yours. For general well-being, iodine supplementation, and thyroid support, a 5% solution is usually sufficient, but some people may prefer a stronger solution. Generally, one to two drops per day is the usual dosage.

If you are intending to use the product for a home therapy or following a specific protocol, we cannot make recommendations on dosage as we are not staffed with medical personnel. You will need to do your own research or contact the source from where you heard or read about the protocol/therapy.

How do I take the drops? This product is only used by counted drops, never dropperfuls. Put the drops in something to drink such as water, juice or tea. Never take drops directly into the mouth. Products that suggest that type of behavior are weak solutions. This isn't one of them.

How much liquid do I need to put my drops in? Think in terms of how much water/tea/juice you generally would use to take a vitamin tablet or capsule so that it goes down smoothly.

How many batches of solution can I make with my kit? If you are making a 5% solution, use the small clear scoop included with your kit. There is enough potassium iodide in that packet to make 20 batches. You could actually make a fresh batch every six months (if you wanted to) for the next 10 years.

If you are making SSKI, the packet contains enough potassium iodide to make one batch.

How long will my solution be good? Although our products contain no preservatives or additives, a 5% solution will last indefinitely. Most customers make a fresh batch once per year. At SSKI strength, the solution will start out very clear to slightly yellow and over time (usually about 8 months), it will turn darker yellow to almost brown. We recommend creating a fresh batch at that time. It won't hurt you, but we feel like the solution may have lost some of its efficacy.

Do I need to refrigerate my mixed solution? No. Refrigeration may cause the potassium iodide to drop out of the solution. The mixed solution is best kept in a cool, dark location, like a cabinet or a shaded spot on the counter.

Does the mixed solution taste bad? No. Some iodine products on the market add a small amount of elemental iodide that cause the taste to be unpleasant. Our product only uses pure potassium iodide and at a 5% solution, if you are sensitive, you may taste a slightly salty taste or may not even notice a taste. At stronger strengths, the salty taste may be more pronounced, but not unpleasant.

If I have health conditions, can I use this product? That would depend on the issue and is best discussed with your primary care professional. Some conditions preclude the use of any iodine supplement. Do not use this product if you are allergic to iodine. Consult your physician or pharmacist regarding any supplement containing potassium if you are on high blood pressure medications. Do not use this product if you are on blood thinners. Do not take this product with other potassium supplements (especially RX potassium supplements) as too much potassium in the body can create an arrhythmia or rapid heart rate. If you have any concerns, consult your physician and discontinue use. We do not recommend using this product with other iodine supplements.

Should my mixed solution fill the bottle? No. The mixed solution will create approximately 1.3 oz of solution. Manufacturers of bottles make 1 oz or 2 oz bottles for these types of uses so your bottle is 2 oz and there will be room left over in the bottle. Do not add additional water or the solution will be over diluted.

Do I have to use distilled water? If you are making a saturated solution (SSKI) the answer is yes. All water, except distilled water, contains particulate matter that would keep your solution from saturating. If you are making a lower strength solution, such as a 5%, the best option is still distilled water, but purified/filtered water will be acceptable. Since we don't have any way of knowing the quality of water in your area, we recommend distilled water for all solutions.

Can I give this to my pets? We have no information on veterinary uses of potassium iodide for animals. Please consult your veterinarian for uses and dosage.

What's the difference between your product and a lugols solution? Lugols solutions are made with a low strength potassium iodide solution to which has been added a tiny amount of elemental iodine. It was originally created as a lab tool for use as a disinfectant, staining slides, or staining tissue before surgery. We have no idea how it made the leap to being ingested as a supplement, but the taste can be unpleasant. Lugols is not a substitute for saturated solution of potassium iodide (SSKI). When mixing a solution to fully saturated, there are only two ingredients in our product: pure potassium iodide and your distilled water. At a saturated strength, you may taste a slightly salty aftertaste (similar to that of many electrolyte drinks). SSKI has a long history of use in many therapies and protocols. We do not sell SSKI, but we provide a kit that enables you to create your own saturated solution.
